According to various reports, AMD has signed a contract with TMSC which will make it an exclusive 28nm fab for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs.
You read it right; Globalfoundries will not be the one producing 28nm GPU’s for AMD, as previously anticipated.
Furthermore, it is now expected that Southern Islands will launch in the second quarter of 2012 and it remains unclear, what AMD plans to do in the year of 2011. Some of our sources say that we should expect lower end 28nm in early 2012 or even faster.
This could also mean that NVIDIA’s 28nm graphics cards are also coming in a similar timeframe.
